Yard Waste

Holiday Collection Schedule

Although Raleigh has long provided for the seasonal collection and recycling of leaves and Christmas trees, the City’s comprehensive yard waste program, initiated in November 1992, provides all households with convenient weekly collection at the curb for yard waste.

Once collected, the yard waste is taken to the City’s Yard Waste Center for mulching and composting. Here the yard waste is ground in a tub grinder, then placed in windrows for seasoning. Wood pallets also are chipped. The products from this yard waste – mulch, compost and wood chips – are on sale at the Yard Waste Center. The City also uses much of its product for its own landscaping and gardening programs at City parks and facilities.

The Yard Waste Center also accepts wood and coal for Warmth for Wake, with volunteers coming in regularly to cut and stack the wood ready for needy families across the county.

Since the City’s yard waste program began, more than 458,673 tons of yard waste have been recycled at the Yard Waste Center.
