Picture Our Visual Landscape!
For more than three decades, the Raleigh Arts Commission has helped shape the visual kaleidoscope that comprises our colorful City of Oaks. The Commission's visual arts endeavors include Block Gallery exhibitions, temporary public art projects such as Red Wolf Ramble and ART-ON-THE-MOVE, permanent public art projects such as the park sculpture Glimpses of the Promised Land, creation of the City's permanent art collection, and production of visual arts information resources ranging from Block Gallery exhibition catalogues, gallery and downtown historical/cultural walking tours, and brochures.
In addition to visual arts projects, the Raleigh Arts Commission championed the creation of Artspace. Attracting thousands of residents and visitors each year, Artspace programs and exhibitions have been key to the renaissance of downtown Raleigh. The Commission also was responsible for the development of the annual Raleigh Street Painting Festival (now under the direction of Visual Art Exchange), that showcases the artwork of more than 450 professional and emerging artists to the delight of festival-goers.
