Why you should care!

Why you should care: the vision for the community is clear!!!

By Dr. James P. West, Raleigh City Council member - District C

Are you concerned about safety in our community? Do you want more stores and businesses to locate in Southeast Raleigh? Are you interested in creating more jobs and leadership opportunities for members of our community? Do you think it is important to maintain affordable housing in Southeast Raleigh as well as make our community appealing for market-rate housing? Do you believe that City and City Council have a responsibility to ensure our community is meaningfully involved in city affairs? Do you agree that Southeast Raleigh deserves economic justice and equitable resource development? In other words, shouldn't our community enjoy the same development and prosperity as other parts of the City of Raleigh?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you need to be part of the CLEAR vision of the Southeast Raleigh Assembly: the Change, Linkage, Empowerment, and Access that are Relevant to improving our community.

  • Change - the primary goal of the Southeast Raleigh Assembly is to establish a community-based asset building model for change that empowers Southeast Raleigh citizens to come together to improve our community and our daily lives.
  • Linkage - the Southeast Raleigh Assembly is a bridge that connects our city government and the business community with Southeast Raleigh citizens. Through the Assembly, the citizens of Southeast Raleigh do not have "business as usual" but instead have the opportunity to communicate with the city and area businesses about what types of goods and services we need and want in our community.
  • Empowerment - the Southeast Raleigh Assembly is based on the premise that "involvement equals empowerment." The Assembly is made of teams of community members combining our strengths and using teamwork to address complex issues like public safety, job creation, and making our neighborhoods the very best they can be.
  • Access - the Southeast Raleigh Assembly will be equip the community volunteers with the necessary skills, tools and resources to identify problems, develop action strategies, and implement solutions.
  • Relevant - We welcome new people to keep our Assembly relevant and diverse. The Assembly is a learning environment where every member/volunteer can learn from others as we all work together to make Southeast Raleigh a thriving place to live, work, and do business.

"When I joined the City Council, I believed it was possible for a group like the Assembly to improve our community. I am very proud that the dream has become a reality. However, the continued success of the Assembly requires your feedback and involvement."
